GYPSY opens Season 10 in Grand Style!
Let us entertain you - GYPSY opens Farmers Alley Theatre’s 10th anniversary season with a bang!
Farmers Alley Theatre is proud to open its milestone 10th anniversary season as West Michigan’s only year-round professional Equity Theatre, with what many consider to be the greatest American musical ever written, GYPSY – running October 6th through the 22nd at the Little Theatre on Oakland Drive. This multiple Tony-Award winner has thrilled audiences for nearly 60 years, and now it’s your chance to discover (or rediscover) what makes this classic musical one of theatre’s all time best.
Meet the original stage mother: Mama Rose. With aggression and ferocity, Rose pushes her two daughters, June and Louise into show business during the lead up to the Great Depression. After June walks out on her family to go it alone, Mama Rose focuses her energy on Louise, who eventually transforms into the real-life famed burlesque star of the 1930’s, Gypsy Rose Lee. Based on Lee’s own memoir and written for the stage by Arthur Laurents, Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim, GYPSY features some of Broadway’s greatest songs including “Together Wherever We Go”, “Let Me Entertain You”, “You Gotta Get a Gimmick” and, of course, “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”.
GYPSY will be directed by Kathy Mulay who has helmed some of our most popular musicals ever (1776, The Light in the Piazza, It Shoulda Been You). Cindy Hunter will Music Direct and Melissa Sparks will choreograph, bringing back the entire directorial team from our stunning production of Cabaret from the summer of 2014.
GYPSY will bring together the largest cast in Farmers Alley Theatre history, with professional talent from Michigan and beyond. NYC professional Mary Jo Mecca, who has worked extensively in regional theatres across the United States, will portray the iconic Mama Rose. University of Michigan Alum Stephanie Maloney will play Louise and Michael Ehlers (A Man of No Importance, I Love a Piano)will return to Farmers Alley Theatre as Herbie. WMU grad Katelyn Langwith plays Dainty June, Vicksburg’s Carver Duncan is Tulsa, and local favorites Sandra Bremer, Mary Teutsch and Brigette Sitarski play a trio of sassy strippers, Mazeppa, Electra and Tessie Tura.
The rest of the cast features Carly Koch, Anna Morris, Alex Crossland, Logan Dolence, John Culbertson, Michael Ray Helms, Brian Panse, Madison Merlanti, Isa Figueroa, Bonnie Smith, Kaitlyn Weickel, Reed Davis, Cash Newton, Emmett Rademacher, Daniel Schubkegel, Ethan Schubkegel, Aiden Wall and Damon Willson.
